Than when we were there last March. Coming from Colorado, we were hoping snowshoes would hold us. We lived the postholing nightnare that you mentioned for 8 days. Looks like I definitely need to go back in the drier months. Great report, thanks for posting.
Thanks! A group of us skied to Kings on March 27. We were lucky in that it was cold and there was some fresh snow so all of the sugar crap was covered up. However, I did notice several gaping snowshoe holes along the way. Perhaps they were yours :)
You owe me a beer for the broken trail... But glad to help. We hiked out on the 26th. We were supposed to stay until the 28th, but our second snow storm of the week put us over the edge. http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=7772&parmuser=Floyd&cpgm=tripmain&ski=Include
I would vote differently for the true Ultimate, instead of Powell-Henry's I would say Gilbert-Gunsight as an extention. That way you would get the Seven tallest 13er's. Also an advantage is one could drop down from Gunsight Pass just a short distance to replenish water.
I thought about this too, but just going from the mental map inside my head, I assumed that Powell and Henrys Fork Peak lined up better. But, now after looking at a 25% scale real map to get the big picture, it's clear that Gilbert, Gunsight, and West Gunsight/Dome line up better. And you're right, it would be nice to get Gilbert.
Another reason why I rejected the Gilbert idea at first was that the route to Powell is a ridge from the start. When I first started thinking about this, the only way I knew to get to Gilbert was via Henrys Fork and Dollar Lake. But, after doing some exploring last month, it is not too bad to start at the Hole in Rock Road #82 (N40 55.423 W110 17.653) and use the trail paralleling Joulious Creek, to turn this section into a ridge run.
Really tought to keep moving quickly and safely over those boulders. Only made 6 of 8 in my normal Kings-Emmons traverse before being stormed off. Made up for it last week and got Kings + S. Kings in 7.5 hrs car-car. This is something else though. Wouldn't the "ultimate" uinta ridge run be an east west traverse of the spine? Of course not doable in a day, but given planning and drop stations I bet some nut could do it in 2-3 days.
You're the animal, 7.5 hrs is an incredibly fast time to do Kings, let alone S Kings too!
As far as the Ultimate Uinta Ridge Run goes, who knows? What you're suggesting would be quite the undertaking, but would not include Kings. Hmmm, I think I'll go figure out the elevation gain and mileage in my spare time.
Great trip report. Scott and I were the ones who pulled into the parking lot as you were heading off on the trail.
If I can offer one piece of advice (I know you've been doing this a long time, but still) - eating food, etc during an uphill is almost pointless. Research has been done on this. When doing that your body is expending energy to climb the hill AND process the food, at which point you don't get nearly the energy from the calories had you eaten the food on a flat or downhill section. You would get a lot more energy from stopping at eating on a descent than on an ascent. Just my two cents.
Congrats again. Great report.
Thanks Jun! Yes, Scott told me that it was you guys. Congrats on your incredibly fast triple crown time.
Thank you for the comment about eating. Normally, I do try to eat on the flats or downhills, and on shorter trips I don't have to pause on the uphills. But, on something long, if I have to stop on the way uphill to catch my breath I figure I might as well put something in my mouth. But, I will rethink that strategy.
Zeejay,
on the last section-flattop Bm out, even though it was down hill, how did you maintain that pace? I trailrun a lot, what I thought is usually a good pace but only match your pace as a"best pace" on any given run let alone it being my overall pace. I find even on downhills the terrain will slow me down(of course depending how rocky/technicle). I feel like I'm pushing it but can only go so fast. What am I doing wrong?
Best,
Al
I think your calculations might be a bit off because I don't think I was going very fast. According to the chart the last section was 6.22 miles and it took me 3 hrs and 24 min. That works out to about 33 min a mile. Without the blisters, I think I could have gone a little faster.
I went back and looked at the chart and now I see. I feel a lot better now. Maybe someday I'll hit this ridge run, it looks awesome! Thanks again for posting and for taking the time to reply.
Best,
Al

Re: Looks alot drier...Thanks for the link. Nice TR. You've got me looking forward to next winter with all of your beautiful pictures. So, are you ever coming back? :)
I wondered why the person in the lead in our group didn't seem to be slowed down by trail breaking. Now I know. Thanks.
