And for making the reasoned decision to turn around when you needed to! As you said, it's a shame that maps and accurate info is so hard to find but it seems you had a good trip anyway. Interesting report!
Thanks. It was a great trip even though it didn't go as we planned. I've never had so much trouble trying to find the finer details about a peak. The shocking part was that the permit office gave us a map that was so incredibly wrong. We intend to send them a letter about that.
Good decisions made. You'll live to climb another day, which is really the better than the summit, cause there's always another summit waiting.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and photos.
Thanks Bill. I had a real struggle with myself when I realized I would have to let go of Izta after thinking about it for so many years. But you are right. There are plenty of more summits waiting.
Hopefully you only let it go for one year! I am really interested in heading to Mexico next year and you will be the first one invited (with QueztalCoatl being second)
Even on smaller volcanoes’, some folks experience this:
"The night before a summit attempt is a strange time for climbers of large volcanoes. Even as a member of a team, each climber is very much alone when contemplating his chances of soon standing on top of the mountain. Alternating thoughts of excitement, fear of the unknown, joy, and personal doubt cycle rapidly through the mind".
But remembering a SP friend's e-mail outlining everything on climbing a tall volcano in the Cascades, which included rest stepping really helped me! ;-)

cool trip& nice tr -- I like it when a tr includes a couple of non-climbing photos to give more feel for the place/time.
