Retro-signing
Climbed the Matterhorn from a camp at Ice Lake with my friend Ryan. Easy hiking and scrambling and a relatively short trail as I recall led to the summit. Ryan descended after that and I went on alone to Sacajawea.

Ice Lake
Dayhike from Wallowa Lake TH. Left at 7:30, up to Ice Lake by 10:45. Left the lake at 11, summit at 12:45. Stayed on top for a while, what a great view. Down to Ice Lake in an hour, steep going, which I paid for in blisters and sore legs on the last 4 miles. Despite walking like an invaild for the last 4 miles, made it back to the TH by 5:30. A beautiful area, would like to camp at Ice Lake someday. Note to self...6000 miles of cycling in 9 months does NOT mean you should do 19 miles and 5500 feet of climbing for your first real hike of the year. I could hardly walk for 3 days after!

Nice easy climb for 1st Wallowa peak. Came from Ice Lake and decended a side scree field. Great peak.

First 9000'er
With my dad and Flanders. First time wearing the rubber boots on a peak since the granite on this one is so crumbly and sharp on my pads. Took a nap at the summit and licked a cute girl's face from Beaverton. Went out a bit on the ridge to Sacajawea but not having opposable thumbs, I couldn't get past the scrambly part. So, Flanders and I waited until Dad tagged Sac and came back. Had a blast in the sand on the way down diving into it. Skiing sand is fun! Also, I tried to herd the deer together at Ice Lake but it didn't work so well. Those guys are fast!

Twice is nice
8/16/09 Again from Ice Lake with Flanders and Lunadog. Beautiful climb and peak. Goats were on the ridge on Hurwal Divide this day. Enjoyed sun and stunning views on the summit before heading off to Sacajawea via the ridge. Skied scree on the way down again from the line between the false summit and Hurwal Divide. Sat in the sand below and rested before spending another night at Ice Lake.
7/28/02 With Bill and Miles. Not sure how or why my original summitlog entry was deleted but whatever. Guessing at this date but it is within a day or so.

Climbed this on the last day of a five day hike in the Wallowas with my girlfriend. Finished it off with a chilly dip in Ice Lake! This place is easily the most incredible place I've ever been!
Climbed from the south side of Ice Lake. Nice 2hr climb. Ran into some Mt. Goats a few times. Headed over to Sacajawea for a great day in the Wallowas.

Ice Lake
I climbed this on a brilliant sunny day with my brother and my grad school roomate. We had a great hike with a few scrambles thrown in. Unfortunately once we were back at camp we decided to rappel into a waterfall to cool off and I split my heal open on a rock and had to be carried back to the trailhead on a pack horse. Not the way I envisioned descending!

Ice Lake up the valley to the south of the lake.
On the last backpack trip with parents and siblings. We started up the drainage of the creek that comes into the SE end of the lake, under Craig. We then scrambled up the ridge between that drainage and Ice Lake to avoid difficulties I can't recall. There was some granite boulder hopping and Dad belayed us across one chute. A little more scrambling than the usual route. The string of tarns up that drainage was beautiful, though the highest one was shallow, warm and buggy. After reaching the top we walked a little way along the ridge towards Sac and then returned to Ice Lake more or less on the standard route. No cairns then, but the way was obvious. My recollection is that the day before, swithbacking up to Ice Lake with a pack, was harder than going to Matterhorn, but my feet were really sore at the end of Matterhorn day.

Ice Lake
Came from Ice Lake. Was with some crazy nor-dakota bros. we found the trail a little difficult to follow and ended up on some nasty loose scree. good times!
Hiked up from Ice Lake while backpacking in the Wallowas with a friend in August 1977. I remember the trail as being dicier in spots than reported in the accounts here or in guidebooks that I have read. I still rate the area around Ice Lake as one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been.

Route Climbed: East Ridge via Ice Lake
Gathering smoke near the basin obscured views a bit, but very worth it. Didn't take time for Sacajawea on account of weather (and tired legs!), but saw four mountain goats on the descent. Great climb in a beautiful locale.
Wonderful Trail with great scenery- although because of several fires in the region (the Columbia Complex fire of ~90K acres) obscured the views of neighboring peaks of the Wallowas. This was a long day hike! I started near Wallowa Lake and managed to hike around 19 miles and 5400 verts in a single shot. Great peak, great place and Great memories for sure.
Climbed this one with my brother on our way from Boise to Portland. We hiked up late in the afternoon and camped on the east side of Ice Lake, woke up in the am and headed up the east ridge. Great views from the summit! Since we were soooo close, we just had to hike the ridge to Sacajawea which had some short class 3 sections. We returned to camp to find another group had set up their camp not 100 feet from our tent (bastards!) so we had to listen to them and their whining dog the rest of the evening. Still, it was a great trip.
