It is true this peak is a very pleasant, early or late season hike; not to mention the top rope practice walls at it's northwest end. For a Jacksonite, this is a fine, short jaunt.

Blacktail Butte
I hiked this with my wife and parents (who turned back before the summit) over Memorial Day weekend. My wife and I enjoyed some great views of the Teton Range. The mountains appeared much larger from the top of the butte than they did from the road. There was quite a bit of snow on the trail. It was a pleasant hike of about 4 miles rt from the northwest trailhead.

Scramble from the Northwest Corner
I've made a pilgrimage to this spot just about every year of my adult life, especially to the top of the little subpeak at the northwest corner. For years, the world drove right by Blacktail Butte while they were gawking at the range. For years, the only signs of life I'd see were elk droppings. But the world's discovered that nice little wall to workout on at the northwest corner, a trail's been built, and a parking area paved. No matter where else I explore in the area, the first place I head to is Blacktail Butte.

Nice surprise
My wife and I camped at the nearby campground and this fit in perfectly for something to do. The fact that it had over 1000 feet of prominence made it worthwhile. The view of the Grand would've been grand but clouds blocked the upper mountain area.
Thanks to Eric Willhite for the map that I used.

Hot afternoon
Hot afternoon hike with Tim Worth after climbing Taylor Mountain that morning.
Of all of the times I have spent on the top of Blacktail, I always remember one moment the most. One of the first times I was up there it was in the middle of winter in the middle of a storm and I had snowshoed up from the park road to the west. When I finally got to the real highpoint in the deep forest, a large bull elk came walking up pretty close before it noticed me. It was one of those quiet moments of awe in the mountains that makes it all worthwhile.
